AOL.com: “What Is Phased Retirement — and Is It the Right Move for You?”
June 21, 2026, AOL — In today’s article on AOL.com, reporter Chris Adams writes, “If you’re thinking the road to retirement may take longer than you expected, you’re not alone. According to a Transamerica Center study, nearly half (48%) of U.S. workers say they expect a “phased retirement.”
What that means: Phased retirement means gradually stepping back from full-time work — whether by reducing hours, shifting to part-time or moving into a less demanding role — rather than stopping work cold. It’s less of a finish line and more of a slow fade.
Marguerita Cheng, certified financial planner and CEO of Blue Ocean Global Wealth, told MoneyLion she has several clients who are pursuing “phased retirements.” According to Cheng, they’re doing so for a number of reasons:
- They recognize that their earnings in their 60s help increase their Social Security (SS) benefits at full retirement age (FRA).
- They’re managing their income carefully around SS earnings limits.
- They’re in good health.
- They like what they do.
- They are highly compensated.
- They can work remotely.
